| Summary, etc. | Este estudio explora el potencial de la innovación frugal para Europa. La innovación frugal se relaciona con el proceso de reducir una solución a las funciones, a menudo básicas, que necesitarán los usuarios, ahorrando así recursos y costos. Si bien las empresas y los empresarios de las economías emergentes tienen una capacidad inigualable para reducir costos y aprovechar el conocimiento local, las empresas europeas pueden encontrar oportunidades para aprovechar la cartera de tecnologías existente en Europa. Para ello, es necesario movilizar más actores en el campo de la explotación tecnológica, fortalecer su interfaz con los desarrolladores de tecnología existentes y mejorar su acceso a los mercados extranjeros. Las empresas europeas no deberían intentar ganar una carrera al fondo del precio. En cambio, el apoyo a las políticas debería defender las soluciones inteligentes y frugales con una orientación al cliente, calidad y sostenibilidad ligeramente mejor que los productos en masa baratos disponibles comúnmente. |

| Summary, etc. | This study explores the potential of frugal innovation for Europe. Frugal innovation relates to the process of reducing a solution to exactly those, often basic, functionalities that users will need, thus economising on resources and cost. While firms and entrepreneurs from emerging economies display unrivalled capacity to cut cost and leverage local knowledge, European firms may find opportunity in leveraging Europe’s existing portfolio of technologies. For this, further actors in the field of technology exploitation need to be mobilised, their interface with existing technology developers strengthened, and their access to foreign markets improved. European firms should not attempt to win a race to the bottom on price. Instead, policy support should champion smart frugal solutions with a slightly better customer-orientation, quality and sustainability than commonly available cheap mass produce. |
